The Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy) and the Ministry of Rural Development have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to skill rural youth and women in the Ayush healthcare system under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya-Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY). This MoU aims to create a synergy between the two ministries to facilitate community development and poverty alleviation in rural areas.

Lakhpati Didis and Self Help Groups (SHGs)

Lakhpati Didis are women who earn Rs. 1 lakh or more annually from Self Help Groups (SHGs). SHGs are small groups of poor people who face similar problems and help each other solve them. They promote small savings among their members, which are kept in a common fund in the name of the SHG. The SHG gives small loans to its members from its common fund.

Training of Rural Poor Youth and Women in Ayush Healthcare System

Under the MoU, skilling of personnel will be done by imparting training to rural poor youth and women for the Ayush healthcare system under the DDU-GKY. The initial target is to train a large number of women, which will be increased going forward. It is expected to create synergy and convergence between both ministries to enable the fulfilment of the larger goal of community development and poverty alleviation in rural areas.

NSQF Compliant Courses

The MoU will ensure the training of 22,000 rural poor youth under National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) compliant courses, namely Panchakarma Technician, Panchkarma Assistant, Ayurvedic Masseur, Kshara Karma Technician, Cupping Therapy Assistant, etc. The Ministry of Rural Development will ensure funding from the Central Government and State Government based on the criteria given for the DDU-GKY.

Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY)

DDU-GKY is a flagship poverty alleviation program launched on 25th September 2014 under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission, Ministry of Rural Development. It aims to skill the poorest of the poor youth between the ages of 15 and 35 years from rural India.

As a part of the Skill India campaign, it plays an instrumental role in supporting the social and economic programs of the government like Make in India, Digital India, Smart Cities, and Start-Up India, Stand-Up India campaigns to position India as the globally preferred manufacturing hub, while dovetailing its efforts to significantly contribute in other flagship programs of the nation.
