The Ministry of Power recently released the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI) for the year 2021-22. The index comprises four categories, namely Front Runner, Achiever, Contender, and Aspirant, based on the states’ performance in energy efficiency initiatives.
Categories in SEEI
The Front Runner category includes five states, namely Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, and Telangana. These states scored more than 60 points in the index, indicating their high level of commitment to energy efficiency.
The Achiever category comprises four states, namely Assam, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Punjab. These states scored between 50 and 60 points in the index, indicating their significant efforts towards energy efficiency.
The Contender category includes nine states, namely Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal. These states scored between 35 and 50 points in the index, indicating their moderate performance in energy efficiency initiatives.
Finally, the Aspirant category includes twelve states and union territories that scored less than 35 points in the index. These states are Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Ladakh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Puducherry.
Objectives of SEEI
The main objective of the SEEI is to encourage states to undertake decarbonization efforts and implement energy-efficient policies. The index also aims to provide recommendations to the states to help them drive change in energy efficiency. This, in turn, will contribute towards the fulfilment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).
About Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE)
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is the organization responsible for developing the SEEI. The BEE was established under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, to assist in developing policies and strategies focused on self-regulation and market principles. The Energy Conservation Act provides for regulatory and promotional functions. The BEE headquarters is located in New Delhi.
